Sicily: How to Experience Italy's Most Fascinating Island Properly

This Is Not a List of Things to Tick Off. This Is How I Experience Sicily Properly.
There are some destinations that impress you immediately, and then there are destinations that slowly reveal themselves.
Sicily belongs firmly in the second category.
The first time I travelled through Sicily, I was struck by its contrasts. Ancient Greek temples standing against dramatic landscapes. Elegant Baroque towns just a short drive from rugged coastline. Tiny family-run trattorias serving recipes that have been perfected over generations.
It is an island that has been shaped by countless cultures — Greek, Roman, Arab, Norman and Spanish — and you can feel those influences everywhere. They appear in the architecture, the language, the traditions and, perhaps most wonderfully, the food.
Many visitors arrive in Sicily with a list of famous places they feel they must see.
The magnificent cities.
The beautiful beaches.
The historic ruins.
And whilst these places absolutely deserve your time, I believe Sicily is best experienced more slowly.
Some of my favourite memories are not of the famous landmarks at all.
They are of drinking a morning espresso in a quiet village square whilst locals discuss the day ahead. Watching fishermen bring their catch into a small harbour. Being invited to try homemade olive oil at a family farm where the owners spoke passionately about land their family had worked for generations.
Those are the moments that stay with you.
Sicily is not somewhere I recommend rushing.
It is a destination for travellers who enjoy long lunches, conversations with locals, discovering hidden corners and allowing a place to reveal itself gradually.
And that is exactly why I love it.
Why Visit Sicily?
Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and offers one of the most diverse holidays in Europe.
You can spend your morning walking through ancient ruins, your afternoon swimming in crystal-clear water and your evening enjoying fresh seafood with a glass of local wine overlooking the sea.
Few destinations offer such variety.

One of the things I particularly appreciate about Sicily is that it still feels authentically Italian.
Whilst parts of mainland Italy can feel overwhelmed by tourism during peak periods, Sicily often feels more relaxed and deeply connected to its traditions.
From ancient Greek ruins to volcanic landscapes and crystal-clear waters, Sicily offers a remarkable variety of experiences.
Currency and Costs
As part of Italy, Sicily uses the Euro (€).
For UK travellers, the exchange rate between the Pound Sterling and Euro naturally changes, so I always recommend checking the latest rate before travelling.
In general, Sicily often offers better value than some of Italy's more famous destinations such as the Amalfi Coast or Venice.
A relaxed lunch with wine in a local restaurant can often cost less than you might expect, and exceptional family-run accommodation can provide incredible value.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Sicily?
Sicily can be enjoyed almost all year round, but the experience changes significantly with the seasons.
April to June – My Favourite Time to Visit
Personally, this is when I think Sicily is at its best.
The countryside is green, wildflowers are blooming, temperatures are comfortable and the island feels relaxed before the height of summer.
It is perfect for exploring villages, enjoying outdoor meals and discovering the coastline.
July and August – Beach and Summer Atmosphere
This is the busiest and hottest period.
The beaches are lively, restaurants are buzzing and the atmosphere is unmistakably Mediterranean.
However, temperatures can regularly climb above 30°C, so I recommend balancing sightseeing with pool time and long leisurely lunches.
September and October – The Hidden Gem Season
If I had to choose another favourite period, it would be early autumn.
The sea remains warm, the summer crowds begin to disappear and the harvest season brings wonderful food experiences.
Winter
Sicily remains milder than much of Europe during winter and can be a fascinating cultural destination, although beach holidays are less suitable.
Every season reveals a different side of Sicily, from spring landscapes and summer beaches to the colours and flavours of the autumn harvest.
Who Is Sicily Perfect For?
One of Sicily's greatest strengths is its ability to suit many different travellers.
Couples
Few destinations are more romantic.
Sunset dinners, boutique hotels, quiet beaches and beautiful old towns make Sicily perfect for couples.
Honeymooners
I particularly love Sicily for honeymooners who want more than simply a beach holiday.
A journey combining luxury accommodation, wine regions, historic towns and coastal relaxation creates an unforgettable experience.
Families
Villa holidays work exceptionally well in Sicily.
The combination of private pools, outdoor space, beaches and excellent food makes it ideal for families.
Food and Wine Lovers
If your favourite travel memories happen around a table, Sicily deserves a place very high on your list.
Whether you're travelling as a couple, a family or celebrating a special occasion, Sicily can be shaped around your perfect style of travel.
Eat Where the Sicilians Eat
If there is one piece of advice I always give to anyone visiting Sicily, it is this:
Eat where the Sicilians eat.
Of course, Sicily has exceptional luxury hotels and wonderful restaurants designed for visitors.
But some of the most memorable meals you will ever have are found in small family-run establishments where recipes have been handed down through generations.
I still remember sitting in a tiny trattoria where there was no English menu, only the owner enthusiastically explaining each dish through a combination of Italian, gestures and a huge smile.
It was one of the best meals of the trip.
Sicilian food tells the story of the island itself.
You will find influences from North Africa, Spain and the wider Mediterranean.
Do not leave without trying:

Pasta alla Norma
Cannoli
Granita with brioche
Fresh seafood
Sicilian pastries
Local wines
Some of the best Sicilian experiences are found around a table — in markets, family kitchens and restaurants where recipes have been passed down through generations.
Even If You Are Staying in a Luxury Hotel
One thing I always encourage my clients to do is leave the hotel for a few meals.
Even the most beautiful resort can only show you one side of Sicily.
A small village restaurant, a family-run vineyard or a seafood café beside a working harbour will give you a connection to the island that no hotel buffet ever can.
The best meals are rarely just about the food.
They are about the people, the stories and the atmosphere.

Some of my favourite mornings in Sicily begin in a market.
The noise.

The famous street markets of Palermo are an experience in themselves, but almost every town has somewhere locals gather to buy fresh produce.

Where to Stay in Sicily: Finding the Right Style of Holiday
One of the reasons I love designing Sicily holidays is the variety of accommodation available.
You can wake up in a restored countryside farmhouse surrounded by olive groves, spend your evenings in a historic boutique hotel overlooking a Baroque town, or enjoy complete privacy in a villa with your own pool and views across the Mediterranean.

Boutique Hotels: My Favourite Way to Experience Sicily
If I had to choose a style of accommodation that captures the spirit of Sicily, it would be a boutique hotel.
Large international hotels can be wonderful, but boutique properties usually tell a story.
Perhaps it is a converted palazzo with centuries of history, a former noble residence, or a small coastal retreat where the owners know every guest by name.
What I love most about these places is their sense of location.
You could not pick them up and place them anywhere else in the world.
The architecture, the food, the atmosphere and the hospitality are all part of Sicily itself.
Villas and Apartments: Privacy, Space and Freedom
Sicily is an exceptional destination for villa holidays.
For families, groups of friends or anyone planning a longer stay, a villa can offer a level of freedom that is difficult to replicate in a hotel.
Imagine starting your day with fresh Sicilian coffee on a terrace overlooking the countryside.
Picking up fresh fruit, bread and cheese from the local market.
Spending the afternoon around your private pool before heading into a nearby village for dinner.
That, to me, is one of the most authentic ways to experience Sicily.
Many villas also offer additional services such as housekeeping, private chefs and concierge support, allowing you to enjoy luxury alongside independence.
Larger Hotels and Resorts
There are also excellent larger hotels and beach resorts across Sicily.
They can be particularly appealing for travellers who want:

Spa facilities
A simpler holiday experience
However, as I always say, even if you choose a beautiful resort, do not allow it to become your entire holiday.
Sicily deserves to be explored.
Drive into the villages.
Find a family-run restaurant.
Visit a market.
Take the scenic route.
Those are often the moments you remember most.

Some of the most rewarding places to explore are the smaller towns and villages that visitors sometimes overlook.
Castelmola sits high above the coastline with breathtaking views towards the sea and the volcano beyond.
Marzamemi is one of my favourite examples of Sicily's relaxed coastal charm, with its colourful buildings, small piazzas and wonderful seafood restaurants.
Erice feels like stepping back in time, with narrow cobbled streets, ancient walls and panoramic views across the island.
These are the places where you slow down.
There is no need for a checklist.
Simply walk, observe and enjoy.
Discover Sicily's Natural Beauty
Sicily is not only about history and food.
The island's landscapes are spectacular.
You can explore the slopes of the magnificent Mount Etna, walk through nature reserves, discover hidden coves or spend the day sailing along the coastline.
For me, one of the greatest luxuries in Sicily is having time.
Time to stop at a viewpoint.
Time to enjoy a second coffee.
Time to take the road that was not on the original plan.
